Get Rid of These Things Before Listing

We're still away from official spring cleaning season, but with darker evenings and cabin fever caused by cold weather, you may be itching to start clearing your home to get it ready to sell.

We've talked about de-cluttering on multiple occasions and how important it is for not just your mental state (which is very important) but especially crucial when you're about to start listing your home online and offering showings. If you don't like seeing clutter around your house, you can guarantee no one else will!

With all of that being said, it can be overwhelming knowing where to start. Maybe you've lived in your home for decades and have naturally accumulated years worth of stuff. To make things easier, we've compiled a list of specific items to eliminate to begin your de-cluttering journey. Use this as a guide or checklist when cleaning out your home.

  • Cardboard food boxes (opt for jars instead)

  • Wire hangers (try to maintain consistency with your clothes hangars with wood or plastic)

  • Old dish sponges

  • Old, worn shoes

  • Clothes you haven't worn in a while

  • Neglected toys

  • Halloween costumes (let's be real -- you or your kid are never going to repeat a costume)

  • Single socks (you know, the ones that lost their partner you keep thinking will reappear?)

  • Expired/old makeup

  • Makeup samples (nice gesture but rarely used)

  • Expired or unidentified medication (yes, Benadryl does expire!)

  • Spices (if it doesn't have a scent anymore, it can be tossed)

  • Last year's holiday cards

  • Frozen items that have gone bad

  • DVDs and CDs (we don't need to explain why)

  • Unused cookbooks

  • Broken umbrellas

  • Multiple of the same chargers or cables

  • Old remote controls

  • Old paint

  • Receipts

  • Appliance manuals

  • Raggedy books

  • Soap scraps

  • Games with missing pieces

  • Finished candles, old potpourri

  • Unusable craft supplies

  • Plastic storage containers

This is step 1 in your home selling journey, but it is a big one! When you're ready to move on to the next step, contact Staging Dallas, and we'd be happy to assist in making your listing experience as seamless as possible with home staging in the Dallas area.
